A gunman shot a customs agent Tuesday afternoon before turning the gun on himself and taking his own life in the parking lot of a Publix shopping center in Oakleaf, FL, said Clay County, FL, deputies.

The agent, who is a pilot for U.S. Customs & Border Protection's Air & Marine Operations, is expected to be OK, a sheriff's office spokesman said.

Deputies said it appeared the agent was targeted, reports WJXT.

The shooting was reported in the Oakleaf Commons shopping center on Oakleaf Plantation Parkway, just west of Branan Field Chaffee Road.

Workers from a nearby business told News4Jax that they were headed to lunch at the Publix grocery store when they heard four or five gunshots. They said the incident was surreal and they stood in shock trying to process what they'd heard. They said police were on the scene within minutes and they never felt like they were personally in danger.
