An off-duty Massachusetts police officer was killed after crashing into the back of a tractor-trailer in the breakdown lane of a highway, reports WCVB.

Massachusetts State Police said Officer Michael Lee, 38, was heading southbound on Interstate 395 when he crashed into the truck parked in the breakdown lane just after 1 a.m. Saturday. The Webster (FL) Police Department officer was pronounced dead at the scene.

"He was an outstanding officer, SWAT operator, investigator, and person. He will be missed by not only his colleagues in law enforcement, but by the community he served."
