President Trump on Thursday honored law enforcement officers who stopped the June 14 attack on congressional Republicans that wounded Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La, reports USA Today.

"These officers saved the lives of every innocent person on the field that day," Trump said during a White House event. "They are American heroes and we salute them."

On what the White House is calling "American Heroes Week," the president awarded the Medal of Valor to Capitol Police Special Agents David Bailey and Crystal Griner, and Alexandria Police Department Officers Nicole Battaglia, Kevin Jobe, and Alexander Jensen.

Scalise, who is still recovering from wounds sustained in the attack during practice for a congressional baseball game, said, "I cannot think of a group of individuals more deserving" than the first responders to the shooting in Alexandria, Va.
