Off-Duty CHP Officer Fatally Shoots Home Intruder

An off-duty California Highway Patrol officer shot a would-be intruder and held him at gunpoint until Redding, CA, Police officers could arrive.

An off-duty California Highway Patrol officer shot a would-be intruder and held him at gunpoint until Redding, CA, Police officers could arrive, reports KRCR TV.

Officers were first dispatched to the 800 block of Country Oak drive early Sunday morning, after getting a report of a subject prowling and attempting to get into a residence through a back door. Officers arrived at the home and spoke to the homeowner, but were unable to find any suspect.

While in the area, SHASCOM got another report of a subject trying to kick in the front door of a home in the 400 block of Country Oak Drive. The caller said that the homeowner was an off-duty California Highway Patrol officer and he had shot the intruder who was attempting to break in.

Officers arrived on scene and found the off-duty California Highway Patrol Officer inside of his residence while he was still holding the suspect at gunpoint.

The suspect had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was taken to a local hospital where he died as a result of his injuries.

The identities of the suspect and the CHP officer have not been released.
