A San Bernardino County (CA) Sheriff’s deputy was hospitalized Tuesday after he accidentally shot himself during a weekly SWAT training exercise in Devore.

Shortly after 10 a.m., the 28-year-old deputy, a member of the SWAT team since 2012, was training with his team at the Frank Bland Regional Training Center on the Long Distance Rifle Range.

Officials said the team was conducting ‘Open-Air Movement’ training when the mishap took place, but the training did not involve shooting of any kind. When the deputy re-holstered his sidearm, a negligent discharge took place striking him in the lower extremities, spokeswoman Cindy Bachman told the Press-Enterprise.
