What began as an unwanted person at a local motel Sunday ended with deadly violence as an officer fatally shot a man who had been hitting her with her own TASER, police said.

"It's a very difficult time for us," said Leonard Bunnell, lieutenant of the 26-member Montville police force, which operates under the supervision of the Connecticut State Police. The officer is recovering at home and will return to work when her physician says it's OK, he told the Hartford Courant Monday.

On Tuesday, state police said the man was Val Thomas, 53, whose last known address was on West Main Street in Norwich. Neither state police nor Bunnell released the officer's name.
