Off-Duty Puerto Rico Officer Killed by Would-Be Robber

Puerto Rico Agent Gilberto Colón-Leon was shot and killed when he took action during a robbery attempt while off duty.

Puerto Rico Agent Gilberto Colón-Leon was shot and killed when he took action during a robbery attempt while off duty at approximately 2:00 a.m. June 13.

He was taking a friend home when multiple subjects approached them at the intersection of Calle Santiago Iglesias and Calle Ruiz Belvis, in Coamo, and attempted to rob them. Agent Colón-Leon was shot multiple times when he attempted to draw his weapon and take action. The subjects fled the scene after shooting him but were arrested approximately two weeks later and charged with murder, reports ODMP.org.

Agent Colón-Leon had served with the Puerto Rico Police Department for almost 20 years and was assigned to the Highway Division. He is survived by his wife and two children.
