The FBI paid at least $1.3 million dollars for the tool that allowed it to break into the iPhone 5 used by San Bernardino terrorist Syed Rizwan Farook, agency director James Comey said Thursday.

Asked how much it cost to buy the hacking tool, Comey told attendees at the Aspen Security Forum in London it was more than he will be paid in the remainder of his job, which is 7 years and 4 months. Comey makes an estimated $183,000 per year.

FBI had previously indicated that agency paid a substantial fee for the assistance, but had declined to provide a specific amount or estimate. The FBI has also refused to disclose the identity of the outside party that provided the assistance, USA Today reports.

Comey also has said that a debate continues within the government over whether to notify Apple of the method used to bypass the security function on the San Bernardino terrorist's iPhone.
