A Georgia K-9 died Friday after being left in the patrol car of a school police officer for nearly three hours.

The incident occurred in Cherokee County, which is north of Atlanta.

Police say the officer, who works with Cherokee County Schools, arrived home around 4:15 p.m. on Friday and turned his patrol car off, leaving the 4-year-old Belgian Malinois in the back of the car as he dealt with another dog inside his home.

The officer remembered that he left the K-9 in his patrol car around 7 p.m., according to police, which is when he found that the K-9 was dead.

The officer was so distraught at the discovery that he was taken to the hospital with breathing difficulties, Fox Carolina reports.
