Prince George's (MD) County Police Officer Jacai Colson was laid to rest Friday as thousands gathered to honor the officer killed in the line of duty.
Fellow law enforcement officers from around the region gathered Friday morning as Colson's casket arrived at the church where he was remembered.
Officer Colson's viewing and funeral took place at the First Baptist Church of Glenarden in Upper Marlboro.
Colson was reportedly killed in a "blue-on-blue" shooting during a gunfight with a man attacking his station. Colson, an undercover officer, was not in uniform during the attack and was apparently mistaken for one of the attackers in the battle. During the fight, he reportedly drew fire from the attacker to himself to protect fellow officers.
Both the viewing and funeral were originally not open to the public. Family and the police decided to open everything up to the public because of the amount of the support received from the community, WUSA TV reports.
