Dallas Police Department Senior Cpl. Ed Lujan was scalped and suffered numerous broken bones early Monday when a car ran over him twice, police say. A suspect, 29-year-old Eduardo Gonzalez-Rios, was shot by Lujan's colleagues but survived, reports the Dallas Morning News.

Shortly after midnight, Lujan was among uniformed Dallas officers working an off-duty job at the Kalua Discotheque in the 2400 block of W. Northwest Highway. Lujan, a 20-year veteran, is a financial crimes detective by day.

Maj. Max Geron of the Dallas police crimes against persons division said Gonzalez-Rios was escorted out by club security after a disturbance and told to leave the premises. Gonzalez-Rios got into his SUV after the valet brought it to him and allegedly backed up quickly and hit one Dallas officer. Police said that officer was not seriously injured.

He then drove forward over a curb and ran "completely over" Lujan, Geron said. Witnesses told police that Gonzalez-Rios also backed over Lujan afterward. The other officers opened fire, striking Gonzalez-Rios. It's unclear how many times he was shot.

Gonzalez-Rios was at Parkland Memorial Hospital. His condition was unknown Monday. He faces charges of aggravated assault on a public servant.

Lujan was in stable condition Monday at Parkland Memorial Hospital, where he was transported following frantic radio calls for assistance.
