An Allentown, PA, man is in custody after he tried to fire a gun at a policeman Sunday morning while fleeing arrest at a convenience store, police said.

Hakeem R. Chappelle, 26, was carrying a .32-caliber pistol when he turned toward the officer and pulled the trigger. The gun jammed without firing, police Capt. Bill Reinik told the Morning Call.

"By the grace of God or whatever, the gun didn't go off," said Reinik, who said officer Stephen James showed a lot of restraint during the encounter.
