DOJ Letter Announces Deferral of Asset Sharing, Effective Immediately

In a letter dated December 21, the Justice Department announced that because of legislation imposing more than $1 billion in cuts to the DOJ Asset Forfeiture Program, it is "deferring for the time being any equitable sharing payments from the Program," effective immediately.

In a letter dated December 21, the Justice Department announced that because of legislation imposing more than $1 billion in cuts to the DOJ Asset Forfeiture Program, it is "deferring for the time being any equitable sharing payments from the Program," effective immediately.

The letter goes on to say, "The Department remains committed to the Program and to the state, local and tribal partners that are integral to its success. We will take all appropriate and necessary measures to minimize the impact of the rescission and reinstate sharing distributions as soon as practical and financially feasible."
