The man who exchanged gunfire with a Millis, Mass., police officer Wednesday afternoon remained at large after police called off an hours-long manhunt at dusk.
Police say a man in a pickup truck fired twice with a black handgun at a police car on Forest Road around 2:26 p.m.
According to a police statement, an officer saw a red pickup truck coming in the opposite direction, and as the two cars met, the driver of the pickup - without provocation - opened fire on the Millis officer.
In an attempt to avoid gunfire and seek cover, the officer drove the cruiser off the road and struck a tree, police told the Metro West Daily News. The police cruiser was immediately engulfed in fire.
The officer, who fired three shots in return, was not injured, though he was taken to Norwood Hospital as a precaution, said Dwyer. Police did not identify the officer.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but it may have been related to the crash, Dwyer said.
