Cherokee Indian Police Department Patrol Officer Anthony "Tony" Lossiah died of medical complications after he was chasing a suspect in a wooded area on Aug. 11 in Cherokee, said Officer Ben Reed. Lossiah tore a muscle in his hip and suffered internal bleeding that led to more complications, Reed said. He died Tuesday at Mission Hospital in Asheville. He was 38.

Lossiah had been with the department for more than 17 years and served in numerous capacities, including as tribal complex security, a juvenile officer, and a child victim unit detective, the Asheville Citizen-Times reports.
