Officers are searching for a person who defaced a fallen Sacramento, CA, officer's headstone at a Colfax cemetery, reports KCRA.

Deputies received a report of vandalism about 7:40 p.m. Thursday at the grave of Officer William Bean at the Colfax Cemetery. Someone noticed the vandalism while visiting family at the cemetery.

At Bean's grave site, two monumental badges were forcibly removed from his headstone – and a note was left behind.

"It's an ongoing investigation at this time, so I can't discuss anything in particular," Placer County sheriff's Lt. Troy Sander said. "But it was extremely derogatory toward law enforcement and to Officer William in particular."

Placer County Sheriff's Department badge No. 30 and Sacramento Police Department badge No. 772 were taken. They symbolize Bean's outstanding service to Placer and Sacramento counties, and, "the ultimate sacrifice he paid for our freedoms," the Placer County Sheriff's Office said in a news release.
