Chief Floyd Simpson of the Corpus Christi (Texas) Police Department, a 25-year veteran of the Dallas Police Department, died Sunday evening in a motorcycle crash in Port Aransas, Texas, according to the police chief there, reports the Dallas Morning News.

Port Aransas Police Chief Scott Burroughs says the accident occurred along Texas State Highway 361. Simpson, he says, was on a motorcycle heading south, back to Corpus Christi, when a Ford pickup traveling north crossed the center lane and "veered into southbound traffic."

A white car in front of Simpson "took evasive action by driving off the roadway and toward the bar ditch there. The chief laid down his bike." And when he did so, Burroughs says, Simpson's helmet "came dislodged, and he hit his head against the road." Simpson, he says, died from injuries sustained from the impact.

Simpson is survived by his wife of 27 years and four children.
