After a Bloomfield Township, Mich., police officer was hurt because of a speeding driver, police are asking drivers to slow down on snow- and ice-covered roads.

“I am thankful that our officer is recovering and going to be OK, but this is a stark reminder of just how dangerous our job is,” said Chief Geof Gaudard.

On Saturday, Feb. 14, the Bloomfield Township officer had stopped his patrol car with emergency lights on along the left shoulder of northbound I-75 near Adams Road, the Macomb Daily reports.

The officer was out of his vehicle assisting a motorist who had gone off the roadway into the median when another driver lost control and struck the officer’s patrol car and then the disabled vehicle.

The officer narrowly avoided being crushed between the vehicles, was struck and thrown into the ditch. He was not taken to the hospital, treated, and released. He is now back on the job.
