Tampa, Fla., police stopped an oncoming train moments before it struck a dog that was tied to the tracks and had been shot three times Wednesday, reports the New York Daily News.

Officers rescued the female pit bull mix, between 1 and 2 years old, that was expected to survive the despicable act of animal cruelty, though her right leg will need to be amputated, the Tampa Police Department said.

When officers arrived they discovered the animal, named Cabela, tied to the tracks with a belt. Officer Nick Wilson and Sgt. R. Mills freed the canine and rushed her to the Tampa Bay Veterinary Emergency Center where she is expected to recover.
