A New York State Police trooper in training died this morning during a run at the police academy in Albany, police said, reports Politics on the Hudson.

Trooper Donald Fredenburg, 23, of Utica, was assigned to the New York State Police Academy for Basic School Training and was participating in a daily physical training run with members of the 203rd Basic School, State Police Superintendent Joseph D’Amico said in a news release.

At 6:30 am, the class was about 1/4 mile into the morning run around the SUNY Albany campus when Fredenburg fell to the ground.

Police academy staff on the scene used an automated external defibrillator on the trooper, and his heart was restarted. But he died an hour later after being transported to nearby Albany Medical Center.

Fredenburg was a U.S. Marine from 2009 until 2013. He was in his second week of training at the academy. He is survived by his wife.
