An off-duty El Paso police motorcycle officer escorting a funeral procession was killed Wednesday in a collision with a car at an East Side intersection.

The name of the officer was not released, but a police spokesman told the El Paso Times he had been with the department for 10 years.

The accident was under investigation by the police Special Traffic Investigations Unit and no charges had been filed as of early Wednesday evening.

Police officials said motorcycle officers were working off-duty as funeral procession escorts when the accident occurred at about 2 p.m. at Yarbrough Drive and Edgemere Boulevard.

One motorcycle officer was blocking westbound traffic on Edgemere while the officer drove north on Yarbrough with flashing lights and sirens, police spokesman Sgt. Chris Mears said.

A 54-year-old woman driving a Honda Civic west on Edgemere allegedly "disregarded" the officer blocking traffic, Mears said. The motorcycle officer hit the driver's side of the Civic.
