A high speed chase that began on Main Street of the small Missouri town of El Dorado Springs early Sunday morning ended in a shootout in a residential area that left two people dead, including a Cedar County Sheriff's deputy.

Authorities say Cedar County sheriff's deputy Matthew Chism, 25, saw a pickup with its headlights off on Main Street and tried to initiate a traffic stop. When the driver wouldn't stop, a short vehicle pursuit ensued.

Eventually, a passenger in the truck jumped out to run away at the intersection of Hickory and High streets. Police told KCTV the suspect and Chism exchanged physical blows followed by gunfire.

Chism was critically injured and taken to Cedar County Memorial Hospital where he later died from his injuries.

Troopers say the suspect who fled from the vehicle, William A. Collins, 28, of El Dorado Springs, was pronounced dead at the scene.
