A veteran Mississippi Gaming Commission officer who was promoted Tuesday to Director of Investigation for the agency was fatally shot Wednesday morning in an accidental shooting at the agency's office in Robinsonville, said Director Allen Godfrey.

The accidental shooting occurred about 9 a.m. at the commission office near Tunica's Casino Strip. The gaming officer was pronounced dead at the scene, Fox 13 Memphis reports.

"The Mississippi Gaming Commission is saddened to confirm the death of an employee, John Gorman," Godfrey said in a statement. "John, a Madison County resident, worked with the Commission for 20 years and had most recently served as Branch Director of the Vicksburg Field Office. He was named Director of Investigations yesterday, January 20, 2015."
