Former dispatcher Carly Moriarty has been hired on as the fourth female officer on the Walpole (Mass.) Police Department. Police Chief Richard Stillman said the department specifically sought out a woman for the open spot to bring the total number of women on the now 40-officer force up to 10 percent, reports the Walpole Times.

Moriarty was previously a Walpole PD dispatcher, recently earning state accolades for her role in saving a baby after a 911 call. She worked as a dispatcher in Norfolk and Foxboro before coming to her hometown of Walpole. In November, Moriarty qualified to become a reserve police officer – an officer with limited responsibilities.

Police candidates become eligible for hire after taking a civil service exam and indicating which towns they are interested in. Moriarty was the top scorer on the gender-based civil service exam, a special test the department sought from the state to ensure a female hire.
