An early morning patrol ended anything but routine for Hemet, Calif., police Officer Bryan Anderson.

Working an overnight shift, he received a call at 3:30 a.m. Sunday from his pregnant wife, Holly, saying she felt she was about to give birth to their son, who wasn’t due for another week.

Anderson hurried home and called paramedics, but they didn’t arrive in time. Anderson delivered baby Michael in their bathroom at 3:53 a.m., the Press Enterprise reports.

The delivery did not go smoothly. The umbilical cord was wrapped around the baby's neck. Anderson knew his infant son was in danger, so he reached into his pocket for his 5.11 Tactical knife—which happened to feature the words "Always Be Ready"—and successfully cut the cord.

His son began to cry, a moment of relief the officer and his wife will never forget.
