Police in Aurora, Colo., are investigating the report of a man who impersonated an officer, stopped a woman's car at night and grabbed the victim by the hair Monday night.

The victim told investigators that a dark sedan — possibly a black Ford Crown Victoria with a flashing red light — pulled in behind her car.  The woman, thinking she was being stopped by police, pulled into an apartment complex, the Denver Post reports.

A man wearing dark clothing, but no badge or police patch, approached her car.

The woman asked for a badge number, and the man "grabbed the victim by the hair and reached into the vehicle and attempted to remove the keys from the ignition," police said. "The victim fought back by punching the suspect in the face."

The man then fled the scene, police said.
