A Leicester, Vt., man faces four counts of attempted murder after shooting a neighbor and two state troopers early Sunday, reports WCAX-TV.

It was 3 a.m. Sunday morning when Vermont State Police received a 911 call from a woman on Lake Dunmore Road in Leicester. She said a neighbor broke into the home and shot her husband in the head.  "Around 3 o'clock I heard three gun shots, then I woke back up again at about quarter to 5 and I heard three more gun shots," said local resident Wayne Hutchins.

When police arrived, the suspect – 47-year-old Timothy Foley -- was found across the street at his home. As police approached, Foley opened fire, injuring two troopers. "One of the troopers was struck in the head with shotgun pellets. Another returned fire at the house while attempting to allow the injured trooper to get to a safe location. The second trooper was shot at and struck in the head with shotgun pellets," Vermont State Police Colonel Tom L'Esperance.

The victims were transported to Porter Hospital in Middlebury. One officer has since been released.  The 2nd trooper and the resident were reported in stable condition. "Following the shooting, the state police hostage team was able to reestablish contact with Mr. Foley. Foley agreed to exit his residence and was taken into custody without incident," Col. L'Esperance said.
