19 People Arrested at University of Minnesota Riot

A NCAA semi-final loss for the University of Minnesota hockey team prompted unrest in the streets of Dinkytown, leading to 19 Arrests

Police arrested 19 people following the Gophers’ hockey team 7-4 loss to Union College in the NCAA hockey finals, according to KSTP News.

Hundreds of people took to the street, with some throwing bottles and others were trying to flip a car, according to reports at the scene. Witnesses in the area told KSTP they ran from someone who threw a bench. Police said there were two known incidents of arson.

Mobile Field Force squads of the Minneapolis PD deployed to quell the disturbance. Police secured the intersection to make sure no cars would get through and to keep an eye on the situation, according to Chief Janeé Harteau, who was wearing riot gear.

"As things escalate and this crowd escalates, we're prepared to escalate as well," she said.

By 12:45 a.m. on Sunday morning, the area was cleared-out, and police reopened the streets of the neighborhood known as Dinkytown.

No officers were injured. There was an undetermined amount of property damage.
