PTSD a Workers' Comp Issue For New Jersey Police

Police officers in New Jersey are allowed to assert PTSD as a workers' compensation claim, but it is not that way in many states.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is considered a workers' compensation issue for New Jersey police officers. However, it's not that way for many states. NJ.com reports on the issues in New Jersey.

Police and other first responders can suffer trauma as a result of their work, and across the country, many police unions are calling for workers' compensation for officers to cover PTSD.

Camden County Police Chief Scott Thomson told a South Jersey Times reporter, "We need to extend far beyond than just when an officer discharges their firearm," he said. "The chronic exposure to traumatic events, such as grisly homicides or heinous crimes against children takes its toll on even the most seasoned officers."
