A Hamilton police officer has died after shooting himself at the city’s central police station, the Toronto Star reports.

Hamilton police announced just after 11 p.m. Tuesday that Staff Sergeant Ian Matthews died of injuries he received earlier in the day. He died at about 10 p.m. in hospital.

“This is devastating and I recognize the profound impact this has on our organization,” Police Chief Glenn De Caire said in a statement.
