Just a day after San Diego Police Chief Bill Lansdowne announced his retirement, the mayor-elect named Assistant Chief Shelley Zimmerman to take the reins of the department as the new top cop, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Zimmerman would be the city’s 34th police chief and the first woman to head the agency.

The swiftness of the selection by Mayor-elect Kevin Faulconer Wednesday came as a bit of a surprise, given that he won’t be sworn in until Monday and that the interim mayor had called for a national search.
