A San Joaquin County, Calif., community college student who is a member of the U.S. Army National Guard and is a Muslim convert was arrested at the Canadian border early Monday and accused of trying to join al Qaeda fighters in Syria, authorities said.

Nicholas Teausant, 20, of Acampo, who allegedly had discussed plans to bomb the subway in Los Angeles around New Year's Day, was taken into custody in Blaine, Wash., after arriving by bus and an Amtrak train from Lodi, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
