VIDEO: Calif. Agency Kills Injured Animals at Range

The Merced (Calif.) Police Department's practice of taking severely injured animals to the police range to shoot and kill them has come under fire, reports CBS Sacramento.

Veterinarians have questioned the agency's policy, which is permitted by the California Penal Code tha allows an officer with the permission of a supervisor to "humanely destroy any abandoned animal in the field in any case where the animal is too severely injured to move or where a veterinarian is not available and it would be more humane to dispose of the animal."

Several northern California law enforcement agencies have adopted "no kill" policies, and the Merced PD didn't comment in the CBS Sacramento report.
