Tougher gun laws would curb Chicago's street violence rather than intervention by the Illinois National Guard, the city's top cop and mayor said earlier this week.

Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy and Mayor Rahm Emanuel made the remarks while attending a police academy graduation Monday of 125 new officers, reports CBS Chicago.

McCarthy responded to suggestions that the Nationa Guard could help nixed the idea, saying "The National Guard is not a policing force. They're a military force."

Over the weekend, Gov. Pat Quinn said he would consider sharing state police resources if the city wanted them and noted that state troopers already patrol East St. Louis.
