A man who opened fire on two Jefferson County (Mo.) Sheriff's deputies was shot and killed by police when he refused to drop his weapon after a six-hour manhunt.

Deputy Nina Osia, 22, initially responded to a 911 hang-up call early Friday from a Cedar Hill home. Residents of the home told the deputy the call had been an accident. After noticing that the bedroom window was open, she left and returned with Deputy Michael Toombs, 43, at about 2 a.m.

When the two deputies searched the basement, Shawn Keith Nims, 40, opened fire and wounded the deputies. Nims then fled the scene.

Law enforcement officers caught up with Nims at an address about a half-mile away at 8:20 a.m. Officers entered the residence with a search dog team and encountered Nims, who jumped out the window into the front yard.

Officers ordered Nims to put down his AK-style rifle. When he refused, he was shot and killed, reports the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
