U.S. Rep. Peter King (R-New York) presented the award honoring John Capuano, 51, of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobbaco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) to the agent's wife on Monday.

Capano, who served 23 years with ATF, was trying to apprehend an armed robbery suspect at a Seaford pharmacy on Dec. 31, 2011. Special Agent Capano was off duty and a customer at the pharmacy picking up cancer medication for his father when he confronted the suspect, James McGoey.

During a physical struggle between the two men, Capano was mistakenly shot by responding retired police officer Christopher Geraghty. The suspect was then fatally shot by Joseph Arbia, an off-duty New York City police officer.
