A federal jury awarded $8.8 million to the family of a robbery suspect fatally shot by Culver City (Calif.) Police in 2010 during a traffic stop.

The U.S. District Court on Wednesday unanimously awarded $2 million to each of Lejoy Grissom's four children and added $825,000.

Grissom, 27, was pulled over by a Culver City PD officer in a parking lot as a suspect in the robbery of a nearby electronics store. Four other officers responded to the scene along with a supervisor.

The officers drew their weapons and ordered Grissom out of his vehicle. Moments after he exited the vehicle, Officer Luis Martinez fired three rounds from a subgun that fatally struck Grissom.

Martinez testified that Grissom had his back to the officers and turned to reveal a shiny object, while the other officers testified that he was facing them and unarmed, reports the Los Angeles Times.
