Despite Gov. Robert Bentley's vetoing a local bill to arm teachers and staff in Franklin County Schools (FCS), the Alabama state legislature passed the legislation last week.

FCS Superintendent Gary Williams noted that it was crucial for the House Bill 116 to pass because it can take law enforcement more than 20 minutes to respond to certain rural schools in the district, WHNT reports.

Now that the bill has passed, Williams will work with law enforcement to train teachers on possible intruders. Additionally, an application process will be in place to certify that certain school personnel can handle emergencies.
