Los Angeles Police Department SWAT officers found the man who shot and wounded a gang officer dead inside a South Los Angeles home Wednesday morning.

The man, who has not been identified, had opened fire on officers at 7 p.m. Wednesday during a parole-probation search of a home located in the Willowbrook neighborhood. The LAPD gang officer was wounded, when he peered into the home's attic after officers had cleared the residence. The suspect shot him in the check and neck. A county probation officer was also wounded during a gun battle involving at least five officers, reports the Los Angeles Times.

The gang officer is listed in critical but stable condition, an LAPD spokesperson told POLICE Magazine.

Following the gun battle, officers surrounded the home. On Wednesday morning, after a 13-hour standoff, SWAT officers deployed tear gas into the home after failing to communicate with the suspect.
