Officers Mike Huffman and Larry Candelari were off duty and returning home from a hunting trip on April 26, when they stopped to help accident victims off Interstate 10 in Kerrville.

The officers noticed a trailer blocking travel lanes and headed to the scene. They showed their badges and began to render aid shortly after 10 p.m., reports ODMP.

A tractor trailer entered the scene and struck the vehicles, causing the officers to get caught up in the wreckage. Canderlari was killed and Huffman lost his leg.

Huffman told KSAT he hopes to get a prosthetic leg and continue his work on the agency's SWAT team, where he has served for 28 years.
