A Las Vegas Metro Police officer died Monday during a search-and-rescue mission while attempting to save a hiker trapped on Mount Charleston.
At some point during the helicopter-assisted rescue, Officer David Vanbuskirk fell to his death. The officers were using the helicopter to hoist the hiker to safety from an area that was too difficult to reach by foot.
Vanbuskirk, 36, was a member of the department's Search and Rescue Unit. He had served the agency since 1999, reports the Las Vegas Sun.
