Colo. Sheriff Launches Hiring Initiative with Tax Revenue

El Paso County (Colo.) Sheriff Terry Maketa hired 40 deputies in January with new sales tax revenue and plans to hire nearly 90 additional deputies in the coming months.

A voter-approved sales tax increase has added $17 to the sheriff's budget.

A 21-week training academy for newly hired deputies began Jan. 14. Two additional training academies are set for May and late summer. A lateral training academy for 19 deputies with previous law enforcement experience will start April 15, reports the Gazette.

Sheriff Maketa is also replacing equipment and buying new patrol vehicles and weapons for incoming deputies.
