A suspect police believe robbed and shot an off-duty San Diego Police officer at an ATM was killed in gunfire as officers attempted to apprehend him Wednesday night.

San Diego officers closed in on Philip Martin Hernandez, 40, in the Barrio Logan neighborhood.

Hernandez, a former firefighter, is suspected of commiting a series of stickups while wearing a jacket emblazoned with the word "POLICE." On Monday, he shot an off-duty San Diego officer who was withdrawing money from an ATM in Escondido. The officer is expected to recover.

Hernandez was facing felony charges of sex with a minor, reports the San Diego Union-Tribune.
