The Houston Police Department's Homicide Division is investigating the fatal shooting of a suspect by an off-duty reserve Harris County Precinct 7 deputy constable.

Corey Hayes, 22, got into a disturbance with his mother and grandmother at an apartment near the deputy shortly before 6:10 p.m. on Thursday. The two women fled to the deputy's apartment and forced their way inside.

After Hayes kicked in the door, the deputy identified herself and gave verbal commands for Hayes to stop, which he ignored. Hayes then charged toward the deputy and his mother, at which point the deputy fired her service weapon, striking and killing Hayes.

The deputy was not injured in the incident, according to a Houston PD release.
