Deputy Ruben Garcia is "progressing in a favorable way" after being shot multiple times Tuesday, his brother, Alifonzo Garcia said Wednesday.
A 29-year veteran of the Maricopa County (Ariz.) Sheriff's Office, the deputy was shot multiple times after responding to a call from a woman in the West Valley telling dispatchers that her ex-boyfriend had a weapon and was threatening her and himself.
Garica's condition is "cautiously optimistic," Officer Chris Hegstrom of the Sheriff’s Office said. He is sedated in the intensive care unit at John C. Lincoln North Mountain Hospital. Doctors weren't able to perform surgery until Wednesday because of his fragile state, Hegstrom said.
