Calif. City Considers Dissolving Embattled Department

The Fullerton City Council will consider launching a study Tuesday that could lead to the dissolution of the city's 104-year-old police department.

The Fullerton City Council will consider launching a study Tuesday that could lead to the dissolution of the city's 104-year-old police department, reports the Los Angeles Times.

The study is the first step in asking the Orange County Sheriff's Department to submit a proposal to take over law enforcement duties in Fullerton.

City Council members told The Times the move is motivated by a desire to reduce the $37 million Fullerton spends each year to operate the department. Councilman Travis Kiger added the agency didn't help itself with the handling of the Kelly Thomas case.
