After listening to dozens of its residents lend support to the embattled Fullerton (Calif.) Police Department, the City Council voted 3-2 to reject a bid to start the process of disbanding the agency, reports the Los Angeles Times.

"You cannot replace people who have grown up here," said Mayor Sharon Quirk-Silva to loud applause. "I completely support the Fullerton Police Department."

Council members Bruce Whitaker and Travis Kiger supported beginning a study that would evaluate the financial impact of disbanning the 104-year-old department and contracting with the Orange County Sheriff's Department for law enforcement services.
