The Douglas County (Ore.) Sheriff's Department is testing a device called a Smart Emissions Reducer on its vehicles in order to save money on fuel and cut emissions.

"We are always looking for ways to economize and cut costs," said Douglas County Commissioner Doug Robertson. "Fuel is a big expense for Douglas County. If the emissions reducer delivers as advertised, it will save the county a lot of money."

The county is working with Extreme Energy Solutions Inc., Smart Air Fuel Saver LLC, and regional distributor, SMART Air Fuel Saver of California, to monitor whether the device delivers on fuel savings and emissions reductions. The sheriff's department will test the device for 90 days and county officials report their fuel-economy and emissions results to the county at the end of the trial.
