Berkeley (Calif.) Police Chief Michael Meehan is defending his decision to deploy 10 officers to knock on doors in search of the teenage son's stolen smartphone.

The chief used 10 officers, including four—three police detectives and a sergeant—who each logged two hours of overtime during the search in January that took them into Oakland, reports the Silicon Valley Mercury News.

The iPhone, which included the Find My iPhone tracking software, was never recovered.
