A Hasidic Jewish NYPD cadet said he plans to sue the agency, after he was dismissed because he refused to trim his beard. The NYPD asked Fishel Litzman, 38, to leave the academy on Friday.

A Hasidic Jewish NYPD cadet said he plans to sue the agency, after he was dismissed because he refused to trim his beard.

The NYPD asked Fishel Litzman, 38, to leave the academy on Friday. Litzman's attorney told CNN the dismissal is an example of religious discrimination.

The NYPD makes "reasonable accommodations in this regard," Deputy Commissioner Paul Browne told CNN. A beard must be trimmed to measure no longer than 1 millimeter in length.
